Embrace the Summer Slump?

As summer heats up, more and more of your staff may be giving their vacation time a workout.

For those stuck inside the office, blue skies and sunny weather might have them doing more daydreaming than actual work. It’s tempting to give in to the siren song of this lazy, laid-back season.

And it seems that many businesses are doing just that.

According to a recent survey conducted by Canadian consulting firm Aon, close to half of employers surveyed say they offer flexible work schedules to their staff during the summer.

Most of these employers choose to compress the workweek, allowing workers to extend their workday by an hour or so Monday through Thursday in order to allow for shorter Fridays.

The benefits of this type of arrangement? A happier team, employees who feel more in charge of their schedules, and possibly even a boost in productivity as those who choose to take advantage of the special hours strive to make the implementation seamless.

It could also help people strike that elusive work-life balance that’s such an important part of overall health.

If your company chooses not to offer a flexible-hours arrangement during the summer, you might consider other measures to show your summer spirit. Even just loosening up on the dress code or providing lunch for everyone on Fridays can make it a little easier to work through a beach-perfect afternoon.
