Ergonomics Matters

You may think ergonomics is simply about the way your office’s workstations are set up, but don’t be tempted to minimize its importance.

The science of ergonomics, which seeks to design the workplace and equipment to fit the worker, is crucial to preventing a host of medical problems.

Bones, muscles, and joints stand to pay the price when one neglects ergonomics or fails to realize its far-reaching implications.

Sitting behind a desk for the majority of each day puts individuals at risk for problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, a common complaint among office workers, back pain, joint and muscle stiffness, headaches, and more. Plus, there’s the additional stress of contending with these issues day after day.

And beyond that there is the factor of safeguarding employees’ health, which benefits you by reducing health-care costs and encouraging a happier, more focused, and more productive staff.

Employees who struggle with repetitive stress injuries caused by ergonomic issues are likely to be less productive on the job. Chronic aches and pains make it difficult to concentrate and perform to the best of one’s ability.

Addressing ergonomic issues now is the best way to prevent pain and suffering for both your company and your employees down the line.

Do your ergonomics research to ensure that workstations in your office are ergonomically friendly, and if they’re not, take steps to correct the problems.

Advise employees to keep you informed of any of their own ergonomic concerns, and be prompt and proactive about addressing them.

And in the meantime, encourage your staff to take occasional breaks throughout the day to stand up, stretch those tight muscles, and shake out the stiffness that comes from prolonged sitting.

Bonus: A good stretching routine can boost energy at the same time.
