Exercise Your Way to Calm

Any kind of exercise has its special perks, and stress-relief is one that applies to all.

Now there’s even more proof that physical activity can ease the burden of stress in your life. According to a new study, reports the American Medical Network, walking to school can reduce stress in kids.

Findings indicate that the walks successfully lowered stress-related heart rate and blood pressure spikes during the day, both of which can eventually lead to cardiovascular disease.

Being introduced to the importance of physical activity early in life can affect health in later years, but that’s not to say it’s ever too late to start reaping the benefits of exercise.

From a health perspective, the single best way to shake off the stress of a hectic day at work is to work some more … work out, that is.

And whether you choose to work it out at the gym, in the pool, or at a local walking track, rest assured that you will feel better (if slightly sweatier) afterward.

Advise your staff members that the next time an important presentation looms or a troublesome client (or coworker) gets under their skin, they should take it as an opportunity to relieve stress and help their body at the same time.

They might not take you up on it, but if they do, you will have made a major impact on their lives and their understanding of the power of being active.

When exercising to ease stress, listen to music that will (depending on what’s most appropriate for your workout) either keep up your pace or soothe and quiet your mind.

A few stress-relieving exercise options:

  • Walking. Take a fast-paced walk in new surroundings. A scenic path along a stream or a nearby park will add a peaceful element that can help you relax as you work the stress out of your body.
  • Yoga. The mind/body components of yoga will help you to let go of the built-up tension of your day (or week, or month, if it comes to that) and find balance and relief.
  • Aerobics. Get your heart pumping with a full-on aerobic exercise routine and you’re sure to come away feeling less stressed. Work out hard enough for the endorphins to kick in, and they’ll take care of any residual tension.
