Allergies at Work

Spring is the peak time for allergies, but indoor allergens can cause year-round trouble. Allergy symptoms are a leading cause of absenteeism; afflicted employees may miss up to 32 hours a week when pollen counts are high. Those who show up at work may be less productive, as both allergies and medications can cause drowsiness.

To minimize symptoms and maximize productivity, consider some of these options:

  • Use a high-efficiency filter in your air system, and change it quarterly.
  • Keep windows closed, especially during peak allergy times.
  • Keep carpets and upholstery well cleaned and vacuumed regularly.
  • Schedule an allergy expert to give a lunchtime talk; well-informed employees are more likely to be able to keep their symptoms (and any drug side effects) to a minimum.
  • Repair any water damage, since it can attract mold.
  • Use portable air filters as needed in enclosed offices.
  • Provide good-quality air filtration masks to employees who are exposed to dust, fumes or toxins.

With a cleaner workplace, everyone can breathe easier.

May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month — prepare now! Check out our brochures and posters that help educate your employees on how to cope with allergies.
