Beyond the Turkey Sandwich

Whether you’re looking to drop a few pounds or save a few bucks, brown-bagging it at the office is a good way to do both.

People who pack their own lunches tend to do better on the fat and calorie front than those who hit the drive-through or grab a sandwich from the corner deli.

Not to mention that the time saved battling the lunch rush can be put to much better use. Instead of inhaling a greasy burger and fries and rushing back to work, people who bring their own lunch can relax and eat and still have time left over to enjoy an energizing midday walk or just sit outside and get some fresh air.

And you don’t have to fall back on the same old turkey sandwich on whole grain every single day. Healthy brown-bag lunch options are limited only by your palate and the contents of your kitchen, so plan ahead when you’re at the grocery store and shop wisely.

A little creativity will keep you from falling into a lunchtime rut.

Think beyond the sandwich:

  • Pack your favorite salad fixings in separate insulated containers and store in the office fridge. Toss it together when it’s time to eat for a light, refreshing lunch.
  • Bring leftovers from last night’s dinner (set lunch portions aside during dinner cleanup to save time) in microwaveable containers to heat and eat.
  • For optimal nutrition and to keep it interesting, make a point to balance your lunches’ color and texture. Include a healthful mix of protein, dairy, and produce.
  • Swap out baked chips or pretzels for the standard potato chips, and whip up a low-fat yogurt or sour cream dip for fruit and veggie slices.
  • Satisfy your sweet tooth with a frozen juice box “ice pop” or a dried fruit and nut trail mix tossed with a handful of chocolate morsels.
