Nutrition at Work

For those trying to follow a healthy eating plan, “convenience” can seem like a bad word.

Fast food restaurants, vending machines stocked with candy bars, potato chips, and soft drinks … all of them pose potential stumbling blocks on the path to adopting a nutritious diet.

And these sources of “convenience foods” seem to be everywhere.

The workplace can have a surprisingly strong impact on the way employees eat. After all, as most waking hours are spent on the job, odds are that at least one meal and probably a few snacks are consumed there.

This gives you a golden opportunity to positively affect your employees’ eating habits, and as a result, to improve their overall physical health; boost their mood, energy, and productivity; and reduce their stress and anxiety.

Spread the word about the importance of nutrition with usable tips and informative, compelling materials that promote a healthy lifestyle.

Do your part to make good foods more easily accessible in your office:

  • Overhaul the offerings in office drink and snack machines. Include a selection of bottled water and packages of trail mix, for example, to balance out the sugary sodas and heavily processed snacks.
  • When food is provided at staff meetings, choose wisely with an eye toward nutrition. Forgo the pizza and soft drinks in favor of lean sandwich fillings, fruit, and bottled water.
  • If your company has an on-site cafeteria, work with the establishment to supplement the menu as needed. Aim to include healthy lunch options such as fresh salads and vegetable offerings.
