New research shows that triathletes seem to have the right idea when it comes to heart health.
The study found that the heart adapts by working more efficiently in response to a combination of resistance and endurance training, such as that required in triathlon activities.
Triathlons combine running, cycling, and swimming in a physical fitness challenge that gives the whole body a thorough workout.
And while most of your employees probably aren’t Ironmen in the making, they can benefit by incorporating resistance and endurance into their own fitness routines.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that about every 25 seconds, one American will have a coronary event.
According to Occupational Health & Safety, a death costs the employer 175 percent of that worker’s annual salary.
That’s not to mention the costs to your business in health care and lost workdays for employees who experience a heart attack.
Encourage your employees to take steps to keep their hearts healthy. For the maximum cardio benefits, take a cue from the study on triathlon training, and focus on combining endurance and resistance.
These include such activities as swimming, running, cycling, and weightlifting.
