Weight Loss and Beyond

Shedding a few pounds through diet and exercise is only half the battle of the bulge; keeping that excess weight off requires a bit more commitment.

Once you’ve determined and achieved your target weight, it’s time to focus on staying there.

Weight management involves a conscious, long-term effort to incorporate fitness and nutrition into your day-to-day life.

According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s Obesity Education Initiative, the most helpful factor in preventing weight regain is sustained physical activity.

One of the best things you can do for your staff is to promote weight loss and subsequent weight management in the workplace. Taking these steps can help ensure healthier, happier employees with a decreased risk of such obesity-related medical problems as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Contrary to popular belief, controlling weight is not about devoting the rest of your life to a strict diet and rigorous exercise. Simply adopting sensible eating habits and getting your fair share of physical activity can help you achieve and maintain your goals.

In addition to those lifestyle changes, reaching and sustaining a healthy weight also benefits from a positive attitude. Encourage yourself with frequent reminders that you are on the road to success.

WebMD offers these tips on how to change the way you think about weight management.

  • Don’t compare yourself to others or focus on unrealistic weight goals. Your aim is good health, not a particular body shape or size.
  • Pay attention to your body cues for hunger and fullness. Keep your mind on what and how much you’re eating.
  • Forget dieting. Diets are not effective for long-term weight management.
  • Focus on improving your overall health by increasing physical activity and maintaining healthy eating habits.
