Defeat Workplace Distractions

What’s keeping your employees from performing at their best?

If the main culprit is lack of concentration, there may be something you can do to help.

And the first order of business is identifying potential concentration killers so your workers can tackle them and get back on track.

According to WebMD, multitasking tops the list.

Being able to divide your attention among several tasks at once may sound like an efficient way to get things done, but in reality it takes more time to switch among tasks than it does to devote your full attention to just one.

Advise your employees to take on one thing at a time and concentrate on giving it their undivided attention. Trying to beat the clock by getting several things done before quitting time is apt to backfire.

Boredom also takes a toll on concentration. Though you’d like to think that your employees enjoy their work and find it fulfilling and engaging at all times, that’s simply not realistic.

Every job has its mundane aspects, and every employee has days where they just aren’t feeling it.

Encourage them to take breaks when they need them, refreshing their waning energy with a snack, a cup of coffee, or just a few minutes away from their desk. (This is a great time to encourage them to get in one of those brisk walks you’re always touting.)

Mental distractions such as personal worries about money, home life, or unfinished chores can make it almost impossible to focus on the work at hand.

One way to clear your head is to write down the nagging thoughts, or develop a brief game plan on dealing with them after work hours, and file your list away to revisit later.

Concentration is a delicate state, and anything from the factors previously mentioned to fatigue, interruptions, and drug side effects or medical problems can break it.

It’s in your employees’ best interest to learn the best ways to focus on work at work, and it’s in your company’s best interest to make as easy as possible for them to do so.

Help your staff identify and eliminate anything that’s getting in the way of their concentration, and cultivate an environment that helps them stay at the top of their game.
