Keys to Keeping Good Employees
You may think that you can’t afford to implement employee retention ideas, or that the only way to reduce turnover is to increase salaries. You may be surprised to learn that employees get more out of your work place than just money, and that there’s plenty of low-cost actions you can take to make them want to stay.
Ideas:
- Create consistency. Giving employees a clear idea of what is expected of them each day and how to meet those expectations gives them a higher comfort level in their jobs.
- Improve communication. Listen to employees and have conversations or discussions about important matters, rather than issuing directives.
- Provide feedback. Employees who get constructive feedback and regular progress reports usually feel more comfortable in and committed to their jobs.
- Make room for talent. A common reason employees leave a job is feeling that their strengths were not utilized. Recognize talents and skills, and offer appropriate opportunities to match them.
- Applaud excellence. Being recognized for doing a good job raises employee satisfaction.
- Treat people fairly. Ensure that the workplace is a level playing field and that everyone gets equal opportunities and treatment.
- Foster learning. Being presented with new responsibilities and opportunities can help an employee feel valued and engaged with their work.
- Be visible. Employees who feel as though they work in a vacuum without feedback or support and that management is far removed from them are often the first to leave. Make all levels of management accessible and hold regular meetings that include staff and supervisors.
