Navigating the Holiday Party Season

Holiday office parties can be a nice, inexpensive way to promote workforce cohesion, community, and reward hard work. But remember, at company events, someone is always watching. The same people who may give performance evaluations, make decisions on raises, and ultimately do the firing may be taking mental notes. Here are a few tips to help you navigate the holiday party season:

Don’t skip the festivities. The office party is part of your job. If this is not your idea of a great time, then consider it work, put on your best attitude and go. Remember to find the boss and thank him for throwing the party as well as the organizing committee chair. Gratitude can go along way in promoting your career.

Mix and Mingle. Interact with as many people as possible, especially the key people like your boss. This is a great opportunity to network with folks you don’t see every day. Avoid gossip and keep your conversation light and interesting.

Don’t overstay your welcome. Hang around for at least an hour so that your presence does not appear to be obligatory. Also, do not stay until the very end. You always want to leave them wanting more.

Dress the part. Make sure that what you wear reflects well on you professionally. If the party is at work or immediately after work, then your normal business attire is appropriate. If not, ask someone you trust what is the norm. In general, it is better to be over-dressed than under-dressed.

Don’t overdo it. Whether the event is a reception with finger foods or a full buffet, keep moderation in mind. You are not there for the food or the drink—over-indulgence in either is a no-no.

Mind your P’s and Q’s. Your behavior will follow you long after the party in the perceptions of your co-workers and bosses.

And, to avoid holiday weight gain, be careful with holiday treats and goodies that are too sweet to ignore. Here are just two quick tips that can make a difference:

Balance out party splurges with very healthy choices at other meals and on other days of the week. Mix in lean meats and as many simply cooked or raw vegetables and fruits as possible.

When you arrive at a party, give yourself 15 minutes before you hit the buffet; grab a nonalcoholic beverage in the meantime to keep your hands busy.
