Crack Down on Office Crime

In a perfect corporate society, you’d never have to worry about violence or crime in the workplace.

Unfortunately, the reality is that keeping your employees safe goes beyond eliminating building hazards and addressing ergonomic concerns. Sometimes, it’s people who present the danger.

Having a keen awareness of potentially dangerous situations is the first line of defense. Advise your staff to report any suspicious activity or safety concerns immediately.

Make sure you equip your employees with the knowledge necessary to protect themselves and each other.

Take measures to help keep your staff members safe from common workplace dangers and crimes, including building intruders, theft of property, and even a volatile and potentially violent coworker.

Doing so will not only assure them that you are looking out for their best interest, but it will also instill the sense of security necessary to keep them focused on their work.

The National Crime Prevention Council offers some tips for making your office secure and keeping your employees safe.

Safety check:

  • Keep your purse, wallet, keys, and other valuables in a locked drawer or with you at all times.
  • Check the identity of strangers in your office building, or inform security of unidentified visitors.
  • Always make sure someone knows where you are, whether you’re working late, leaving for a doctor’s appointment, or going to a meeting.
  • Report any burned-out lights, dimly lit hallways, doors that don’t lock properly, or broken windows.
  • Use good judgment and discretion when discussing your vacation plans or other personal information.
  • Don’t work late if you’ll be the only person in the office. If you leave after dark, ask someone to walk to the parking lot with you.
