Dangerous Distractions

Identify employee distractions — personal and work related — before they become a safety issue. Then help employees by following these simple suggestions:

  • Work with your employees to develop plans that allow them to get work done safely.
  • Encourage employees to take advantage of your employee assistance program when personal issues arise.
  • Remain flexible. Allow employees extra time to take care of personal problems, to prevent the issues from becoming distractions.
  • Remind employees to turn off or tag out equipment by strategically placing signs or by using alarms.
  • Ensure that your employees know that no job is so important that they should take shortcuts to complete the work in a timely manner. Remember, employees face a tough situation when they feel pressured to complete work but don’t have enough time. To prevent shortcuts, listen to employee concerns and allow more time or add more resources.
