Safety-Savvy Exercise

As important as it is to get regular exercise, it’s just as crucial to do it the right way.

Exercise safety is a topic that is often overlooked in the effort to encourage employees to start a fitness regimen.

While it’s tempting to focus on that end goal, it’s a good idea to tout safety tips and advice as a complement to promoting physical fitness.

Maybe you haven’t considered the impact of worker safety beyond the hours they spend in the office. But taking steps to educate your staff on exercising safely helps prevent injury that might cost your company in lost workdays and productivity.

Because any new activity can put strain on the body, remind employees that they should check with their doctor before beginning a new exercise program.

Livestrong.com offers the following tips for ensuring a good workout and minimizing the risk of injury:

  • Avoid excess. Pushing yourself too hard before your body is ready or trying to cram a week’s worth of exercise into a couple of days increases the chance of muscle or tissue injury.
  • Take precautions. Avoid working out during the hottest part of the day, stretch beforehand to get your muscles ready, stay well hydrated throughout, and include a cool-down period at the end of your workout.
  • Wear appropriate clothing. Loose, comfortable clothes that allow for good air circulation are a smart choice, and cotton absorbs sweat and lets the skin breathe.
  • Choose the right equipment. Safety gear such as a bike helmet for cycling can save you from severe injury or death in the case of an accident. Consider shoes with reflective strips to make yourself visible to cars if you’re walking after sundown.
